Hiroka Matsumoto


An emerging violinist Hiroka Matsumoto was born in Tokyo in April 1995. She started playing the violin at the age of four. When she was seven her talent was celebrated by Prof. Zakhar Bron as “Ms. Matsumoto, who is extremely gifted and blessed a huge potential capacity, will undoubtedly grow into a unique musical personality”. Hiroka gave her first recital in Budapest when she was nine years old.

Hiroka Matsumoto has won numerous awards such as the Second Prize at the 10th Wieniawski and Lipinski International Competition in 2006; the First Prize in the elementary school students division of the 61st Student Music Concours of Japan in 2007; the first Yehudi Menuhin Next Generation Award from Kronberg Academy in Germany in 2009; the Ishikawa Music Academy Award in 2009; and the ABC Music Award in 2010.

In December 2009 in Tokyo, Hiroka had an honor to play the infant violin which was used by the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and is owned by the International Mozarteum Foundation for the first time outside of Austria.

Hiroka Matsumoto has performed many solo recitals and concertos in Japan and Europe, appearing as a soloist with Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Japan Century Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra and Györ Philharmonic Orchestra of Hungary, playing various violin concertos of composers including but not limited to Beethoven, Paganini, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky.

Hiroka studied with Prof. Koichiro Harada and Prof. Gerard Poulet in Japan. She moved to Wien in October 2012. Since then she has been studying with Prof. Boris Kuschnir at the Konservatorium Wien University.

She constantly receives advices also from Prof. Igor Ozim and Prof. Ana Chumachenco.

She received the Scholarship from the Yamaha Music Foundation durin gApril 2009 -- March 2012 and one from the Meiji-Yasuda Cultural Foundation during September 2012 -- August 2014.

She has been granted the fellowship to study in Austria for the period from September 2014 to July 2017 by the Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Japanese Government.
